Useful Links

Coxwold, Byland Abbey, Oldstead.

The target of this walk is the picturesque and photogenic ruin of Byland Abbey, although there is lovely countryside along the way. The walk lies just outside the Howardian Hills AONB, hence its omission from the series of books. The Abbey ruins are open to the public and although they are extensive, you should have time to explore them.
Lots of stiles make the first half of the walk quite an obstacle course. The wooded scarp on the right in the third quarter of the walk is a mass of colour, especially in the autumn. Although the second half of the walk is along country lanes, the volume of traffic is very light.
The area of land just below Coxwold early on in the walk gets very boggy so take care if there has been a lot of rain.)

Location and Parking
Coxwold is situated some 9 miles south east of Thirsk. Newburgh Priory lies just south of the village. From the crossroads in the centre of the village go uphill and park on the gravelled parking areas on the right around the Fauconberg Arms.
